The art exploratory for 6th grade at the Middle School is one quarter in length.  6th grade students will review and study the elements and principle of design and complete a folder that includes their initials.  This design activity will allow them to practice and show their knowledge of design.  The next unit reviews portraits and self portraits with the inclusion of correct facial feature placement and element value.  The students will draw their self portrait using pencil and show value changes by shading.  The second portrait activity will use mixed media of tissue paper collage, special pens, paint, and other materials of choice.  The portrait will be done in an abstract manner.  After the portraits, the students will do a landscape using water color techniques and spacial organization.  The final project will be fiber design.  Basic weaving techniques will be used on a simple loom to make a woven wall hanging.  6th grade art students will also be expected to complete the assignments using the art standards with proficiency.  They will also be expected to work on smaller activities or folder work to practice their art skills.
